At least 21 people were arrested on Tuesday after a riot broke out amid a dispute over the relocation of an Indian temple outside Kuala Lumpur.

Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor said 21 people were detained and will be investigated for rioting with weapons and arson.

He added that nearly two dozen vehicles were torched but the situation is under control.

The riot began on early Monday morning after a group of intruders attacked Indian devotees praying at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in central Selangor state's Subang Jaya township. Another group of men retaliated early Tuesday morning by vandalising the office of property developer MCT Berhad near the temple.

Around 700 anti-riot personnel were deployed to maintain peace in the area.

Members of the temple told local media that men were armed with weapons such as knives and they asked devotees to leave the temple because the land was reportedly owned by One City Development.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the investigation behind the riot is underway and also warned the public to not make any statements that could raise racial disharmony and hurt national security.
