An Iraqi court had decided to sentence 16 Turkish women to death for being members of ISIS on Sunday, reports said.

The court directed the women to be hanged after they were found guilty of marrying ISIS fighters and providing the group with support.

Abdul Sattar Bayraktar, the spokesman of Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council said that the brides had the group with aid, including logistical support and help carrying out terrorist attacks.

The women, aged between 20 - 50, were sentenced in a mass trial at a criminal court in Baghdad on Sunday. Some had young children with them.

The public defender argued that the women had been trafficked into jihadi territory or tricked by their husbands.

The sentences were issued under Iraq's counterterrorism law, however, the defendants still have a chance to appeal to a higher court.

Another Turkish woman was sentenced to death last week and 10 others of various nationalities to life in prison, all for alleged ISIS membership.

Last month, a British woman who married and gave birth under the Islamic State regime in Syria became one of the first so-called jihadi brides to be arrested on her return to the UK, a media report had claimed.
