12 dead, 18 injured in bus crash in Mexico

According to Mexican media, at least 12 people were reported dead and 18 injured in a bus crash that took place in eastern Mexico.

While 7 of the total number of people injured were identified as Americans, the authorities did not disclose any data on passengers who died in the accident.

The bus was carrying cruise ship passengers and flipped on a highway after crashing.

"We express our condolences to all those affected by this tragedy," a spokesman for the US Embassy said on the crash. 

The officials said they were in contact with local authorities to identify if there more US citizens on board.

The injured were rushed to the local hospitals situated in Bacalar and Chetumal.

Representatives from the US mission in Mexico are working with local authorities to identify and help American citizens involved in the mishap, noted Heather Nauert, United States Department of State spokesperson.

The bus was heading to Mayan ruins in eastern Mexico; the cause of the accident is still unknown.
