Twelve migrant agricultural workers were killed on Monday when the van transporting them collided into a lorry in Italy, news agency AFP reported.

The accident took place near the city of Foggia in Puglia in southern Italy.

All those who died in the crash were non-EU citizens, AFP reported.

Every summer thousands of migrants from around Europe and Africa work in the area picking tomatoes.

Meanwhile, in another separate incident, one person died and 40 were injured after a tanker truck exploded on a motorway just outside the northern Italian city of Bologna engulfing the area with flames and black smoke.

The explosion occurred near Borgo Paginale to the west of the city, very close to Bologna airport, at around 2:00 pm (1200 GMT), the Italian fire service said on Twitter.

The cause of the blast is not yet known.

Images released earlier by the fire service showed burning cars in an adjacent carpark.
