As the coronavirus death toll in the United States reached 100,000, US President Donald Trump said it was "a very sad milestone".

Trump took another dig at China saying "all over the world the coronavirus, a very bad 'gift' from China, marches on".

The United States has the highest COVID-19 death toll in the world with 100, 871 casualties and over 1.7 million infection cases. 

Amid the virus crisis, the US economy has experienced shocks not seen since the Great Depression in the early 30s with the number of workers filing for jobless benefits crossing 40 million even as major companies continued to slash jobs with Boeing planning to cut ten per cent of its workforce.

According to reports, US motor sales plunged over 52 per cent as the US Commerce Department reported that GDP fell 5.0 per cent in the first three months of the year.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the collapse in the April-June quarter could be as bad as 30 per cent.
