InSight 'mole' will dig into Mars subsoil, measure planet's heat fluxes

The German Space Agency presents HP 3, a self-hammering probe that will bore down 10 to 16 feet (three to five meters) below the surface of Mars. Co-developed with the Polish Space agency, the probe is part of NASA's latest Mars lander called InSight, designed to perch on the surface and listen for "Marsquakes" ahead of eventual human missions to explore the Red Planet. The landing is scheduled for November 26.
