Hope for Mauritanian desert economy as tourists return

For most of the last decade, the spectacular dunes, barren canyons and oases of the Adrar region in West Africa have been a no-go zone for European nationals. The danger of terrorist attacks and kidnappings is still real, reflected by Mauritania’s decision to join four other countries in fighting terrorism in the Sahel.
