From Watergate to Partygate: Shorthand for scandal

A break-in 50 years ago by Republican operatives at a Washington office led to the historic resignation of US president Richard Nixon. But it reverberated more deeply around the world with the coining of a single term: Watergate. That's the name of a Potomac riverside building as that building lent its name to one of the greatest American political crimes. The suffix 'gate' became the signifier for scandals worldwide.
