In the year 2007, his tenure as captain ended after Pakistan's early exit from the 2007 World Cup. Then retired from international cricket in the same year.

In his cricketing career, he played 120 Tests and scored 8,830 runs and in 378 One-Day Internationals he scored 11,739 runs

After announcing retirement, he took over as Afghanistan's head coach in October 2015. As the Afghanistan coach, he helped a mediocre Afghan cricket team to win their first ODI and T20I series against a Full Member.

Blessed with a splendid physique of six-foot-three-inches, Inzamam has been known to be a very destructive batsman in both One Day Internationals and Test matches.
