Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev among others to support players amid coronavirus

Cricketing greats such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Gautam Gambhir have pledged their support to Indian Cricketers Association (ICA). According to ICA's president Ashok Malhotra, the association has decided to financially help 30 cricketers across the country.

The association has so far raised Rs 39 lakhs to help former cricketers. Malhotra said: "Big names like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Gautam Gambhir and Gundappa Viswanath have joined us and that is a major boost to our initiative. A corporate from Gujarat has also offered its support." 

According to sources, former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin has also pledged his support to the initiative. He has decided to financially contribute to help the players in need. 

The donations will be accepted till May 15 after which they will shortlist five to six players from each domestic zone (north, east, west, south and central). 

The ICA itself has donated Rs 10 lakhs and has over 1,750 former cricketers registered with them. BCCI had given Rs 2 crore in February to begin its operations.
