Olympic-medallist Saina Nehwal suffered a shocking defeat in the opening round of China Open on Wednesday. China's Cai Yan Yan thrashed ninth-ranked Nehwal in straight sets 21-9, 21-12.

On Monday, India's highest-ranked shuttler PV Sindhu also faced a shocking defeat in the first round. Nehwal, who lost against the 22-ranked player, extended her disappointing run after consecutive early-round exits in France, Denmark, and Korea, among others.&nbsp;

As both top shuttlers are out from the tournament, Satwiksairaj Reddy leads India's hopes as he entered the second round in doubles and mixed doubles in China.&nbsp;
