Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri hit by racist slur during Instagram live chat

Sports personalities have been a constant victim of racism. Players have been a target based on caste, colour or religion. During a live video chat with Virat Kohli, Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri fell victim to some racial slurs passed by online users. 

Indian cricket skipper Virat Kohli and Sunil Chhetri have been good friends and have spoken highly of each other and during Sunday's Instagram live chats few people questioned Chhetri's ethnicity based on his looks. An Instagram user 'yasharma.official' commented "Ye Nepali kon hai (Who is this Nepali)."

This comment was highlighted by other netizens and condemned such kind of racism. On of the users on Twitter said: "The Indian football captain is called Nepali can only imagine the plight of North East people here. People not knowing Chhetri is still fine. But society has sort of normalised chinki, Nepali etc towards them. It's shameful."

The Indian captain has been subject to racism before also, and during an interview with Quint he called such people "ignorant". He said: "The people who are doing it, and who understand the difference, are just ignorant. It's just not right. You shouldn't do it."

"Let's suppose you are working in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam or Sikkim, and people hound you or bully you or trouble you. How will you feel?", he had further said.
