India won World Cup today 7 years ago: Watch that winning moment
On April 2, 2011, MS Dhoni-led 'Men in Blue' ended a twenty-eight year drought and clinched the most awaited ICC World Cup trophy by defeating Sri Lanka in the finals at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
India is the third country to have won the title more than once after Australia (1987, 1999, 2003 and 2007) and the West Indies (1975 and 1979).
In the match, Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and chose to bat. Playing first, Sri Lanka scored a total of 274 runs.
In reply, India suffered initially in the form of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar's wicket in quick session but Gautam Gambhir paved the way to victory as he scored 97 runs but lost his wicket in the 42nd over.
The winning runs were architected by skipper MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh. For displaying a brilliant performance in a pressure situation and scoring 91 runs, Dhoni was awarded "man of the match" and Yuvraj Singh was declared as the "man of the series".
It's time to relive the history when the whole nation was celebrating India's win and when legendary star Sachin Tendulkar lived his dream of winning the World Cup in his sixth attempt.
