'He's got credibility, leadership skills' - Graeme Smith wants Sourav Ganguly to become ICC chairman

South Africa’s director of cricket Graeme Smith on Thursday made a strong call for the current Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and former captain of India Sourav Ganguly to be the next chairman of International Cricket Council.

Smith said that with credibility and leadership skills, Ganguly is best positioned to take charge of ICC while adding he would like to see someone who’s closer to modern game with leadership character for the key position.

“Post COVID (19), to have strong leadership is going to be important. I feel that Saurav Ganguly is best positioned for that at the moment. He’s got the credibility, he’s got the leadership skills & he’s someone who can really take the game forward." - Graeme Smith

"We know that the elections are coming up and there are a few names in the hat, but my own opinion is that it’s time that someone who’s closer to the modern game with the leadership credentials got into a key position." CSA Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith.
Shashank Manohar, who is the current chairman of ICC – also from India, had earlier said that he would not seek re-election when his current term expires at the end of May.

On a teleconference, where Cricket South Africa interim chief director Jacques Faul revealed plans for the Proteas to host a T20I series against India at August-end, Smith backed Ganguly to be ICC’s next chairman. 

Smith further said that South Africa’s tour of the West Indies, scheduled for July, was likely to be deferred due to the Caribbean outfit’s tour of England. "Nothing is cast in stone at the moment," he said.
