German Bundesliga set to resume in May to 'limit economic damage'

The German government are set to allow football matches to take place after weeks of lockdown due to coronavirus lockdown. The matches will begin in May and will be played behind closed doors, according to the draft government agreement.

According to Germany's top brass, restarting games for their first and second division will help "limit economic damage" for 36 clubs.

Bundesliga is the top-flight league n German football followed by a second division league, both have 36 clubs and more than a dozen of them are on brink of bankruptcy. The league will earn nearly 300 million euros from TV contract if the season is allowed to complete. 

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be setting a date for the football season to resume. The date will be announced after a telephone conference between the Chancellor and the State Premiers.

According to few media reports, the season could resume from May 21, and if it does, Bundesliga will become the first European football league to return into action. 

The teams have returned to training since April 6 but the rules of social distancing are strictly followed. 

"Restarting match activity must be preceded by a two-week quarantine, where appropriate in the form of a training camp" for players," the document read.
