In the opening set, Dimitrov broke serve to lead 4-2 but Sandgren broke back when the Bulgarian served for the set at 5-3. Dimitrov then clinched the set in the twelfth game with his fourth break point of the game.
The second set was far more straightforward as Dimitrov broke to lead 3-0. He comfortably held serve for the remainder of the set, sealing victory in 84 minutes.
Dimitrov will now face Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in the next round.
