UCL: Jose Mourinho expresses frustration with starting eleven after losing to Valencia

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has demanded more from his players after his side missed the chance to finish top of its Champions League group.

United lost 2-1 at Valencia on Wednesday, with an embarrassing own-goal by Phil Jones.

Mourinho got a chance to rotate his squad as United went into the final Group H match having already qualified for the last 16 of the competition.

While he found a little comfort in the players' performance that lacked energy and drive.

With first-place Juventus losing 2-1 at Young Boys, United could have jumped above the Italian team in Group H with a win at the Mestalla but Mourinho's decision to play a virtual reserve lineup backfired.

The frustrated manager said that he expects more from the players.

"My team improved really when I made the changes that I didn't want to make which is a little bit of frustration because I didn't want to play the three players that I played in the second half,'' said Mourinho.

"I think that to qualify in this group is a success. Never a failure to finish second in this group is always a success," added the Portuguese.

Paul Pogba returned to the starting side after being benched for the last two Premier League games but the French international midfielder failed to seize his opportunity.

United then introduced striker Marcus Rashford, and midfielders Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young as they chased the game after falling 2-0 behind.
