'I know that I've got the support of the guys in the room and for me that's all that really matters,' said Smith

Former Australian skipper Steve Smith, who is playing in his first Test after returning from the ban for his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering row, is not bothered by being booed by Edgbaston crowd.

Smith smashed a brilliant century to help his team put up a competitive total in the first innings of the first Test. When the Australian side was struggling at 122 for 8 at one stage, Smith scored 144 and held the innings together after England threatened to bowl them out cheaply.

It was Smith's 24th Test century and probably one of his most important but he was greeted with boos by the hostile English crowd.

Besides that, the crowd also waved sandpapers at both Cameron Bancroft and David Warner post their dismissals as they walked off the field.

All three batsmen were involved in the ball-tampering scandal.

"It doesn't bother me to be perfectly honest. I know that I've got the support of the guys in the room and for me that's all that really matters," on being asked about the treatment he received at Edgbaston.

"They went beserk on the balcony when I got to 100 and just looking up at them, it really sent shivers down my spine," Smith added.

"It's been a long time coming, getting another Test 100. It was just a huge moment and again, I said it, I'm lost for words, I don't really know what to say," said Smith.

At the close of Day one, England were 10 without loss.
