Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh wait for UNSC visit

Rohingya refugees at a camp in Bangladesh said on Saturday they were eagerly awaiting the visit by a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) delegation which is studying the crisis, according to reports by Reuters.

A 15-member UNSC panel is visiting them refugees which, they hope, would help them get Myanmar citizenship as well as regain property and assets they left behind when they fled to Bangladesh

They are also seeking justice for the violence they suffered at the hands of the Myanmar military and said would only return to their homes across the border if their demands were guaranteed by an international body, a Reuters report said.

The UNSC group will visit refugee camps and meet Bangladeshi officials before heading to Myanmar where they are scheduled to visit areas in Rakhine state where the refugees are from.

Myanmar has faced international criticism over its actions towards Rohingya Muslims that have sent nearly 700,000 members of the minority community fleeing to Bangladesh. The United Nations, United States, Britain and others have described the operation as ethnic cleansing, which Myanmar has denied.
