Rohingya crisis: UN Security Council to visit Myanmar, Bangladesh this month

The UN Security Council (UNSC) is likely to visit Myanmar and Bangladesh later this month to take stock of the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

The Myanmar government has welcomed UNSC's visit and is in the process of finalising the details of the visit.

The Council's will aim at visiting the tension-gripped Rakhine state. UN officials will also visit Bangladesh's Cox Bazaar where a majority of Rohingya refugees have taken shelter.

The UN described the Rohingyas fleeing -- triggered by widespread attacks -- as "ethnic cleansing."

UNSC has been grappling with internal divisions in its stance on the crisis due to which the council has not been able to take any decisive action. UNSC officials will also visit Iraq this month.
