Pakistani man accuses Indian high commission of detaining wife, India says she sought help

An Indian woman married to a Pakistani man has reportedly asked the Indian high commission to send her to India after finding out that her husband is already married and has four children, according to a report in Dawn.

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria said in a statement that "the Indian High Commission informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that an Indian national, Ms Uzma, 20, had approached them with the request to be repatriated to India."

"According to the Indian High Commission, she claimed to have married Mr Tahir and alleged that she later came to know that Mr Tahir was already married and had four children," Zakaria said. 

Uzma, an Indian national, reportedly, met Ali, who is from Pakistan, in Malaysia where the latter was working as a taxi driver eight months ago.

The two had a court marriage on May 3, two days after Uzma arrived in Pakistan via the Wagah border.

Uzma's brother asked her to come to India for her honeymoon, the Dawn report said. 

Her brother had asked Uzma to ask for Adnan at the Indian high commission who will sort out the visa issue.

Ali alleged that they both went to the Indian High commission to submit their visa application forms.

"At the Indian embassy window, she asked about Adnan. A while later, a man came out and took her inside through gate number six. I waited and waited, and then at 7 pm, I asked at the embassy gate if my wife Uzma was inside. They told me no one was inside," Dawn quoted Ali, as saying.

After that, he filed a complaint with the police.

The Dawn report claimed that the Indian high commission confirmed that the woman is present in the building and would be allowed to leave only after the matter is discussed with the Pakistan Foreign Office.

Pakistan's Foreign Office later said that it was in touch with the Indian high commission and that the issue would be resolved soon.
