Pak foreign minister Qureshi meets newly-elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Colombo

After concluding his three-day trip to India, newly-elected Sri Lankan president met Pakistan's foreign minister on Monday where the later invited him for a visit to Pakistan.

Pakistan's foreign minister Mahmood Qureshi's visit to Sri Lanka comes a day after Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa wrapped up his three-day visit to India. Qureshi arrived in Colombo late Sunday night for a two-day trip. 

"FM calls on the President of Sri Lanka. Bilateral issues, trade, investment and people to people contacts discussed. FM handed over a letter from President to President of Sri Lanka and invited him to visit Pakistan at his earliest convenience," Pakistan's Foreign Office Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal tweeted.

Qureshi also held talks with his Sri Lankan counterpart Dinesh Gunewardene, where he stressed that both nations have been supportive of each other in areas such as economy and peace efforts. The two leaders also discussed trade, investment and tourism, according to local reports. 

During Rajapaksa's visit to India, the government had offered financial assistance of hundreds of millions of dollars to Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the country will credit give $400 million line of credit to improve its infrastructure and economy.

PM Modi also offered aid of $50 million to the island nation to strengthen its security and intelligence gathering, notably after the April 21 Easter attacks in which over 250 people were killed. 

Rajapaksa termed the visit "successful", adding that the reception accorded by the Indian government will strengthen the "historic bond" between both the nations.
