Pakistan: Anti-terrorism court convicts four JuD leaders

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan convicted four people of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) on Thursday in a terror-financing case. 

JuD's Malik Zafar Iqbal and Muhammad Yahya were convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 and sentenced to five years each with a fine of Rs 50,000, The Dawn reported. The other two convicts, Abdul Rehman Makki and Abdul Salam were given imprisonment of one year each with a fine of Rs 20,000.

This verdict belonged to one of the 23 cases filed by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) against JuD.

The judge said that the property questioned appears to be used for terror financing. 

"There was a strong suspicion that the said property was used or suspected to have been used for the purpose of terror financing," the judge said. 

After the verdict, CTD spokesman said three of the convicts were UN-designated people involved in terrorism financing and said that their conviction would play a huge role in checking terror financing in the country.

Earlier in February, five-and-a-half-year imprisonment was handed down to Hafiz Saeed, leader of the JuD and the mastermind of the 26/11 terror attacks in India.
