Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose died in a plane crash in Taiwan in 1945, India’s central government has said.

“After considering the reports of Shahnawaz Committee, Justice GD Khosla Commission and Justice Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry, the Government has come to the conclusion that Netaji has died in plane crash in 1945,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in reply to an RTI query.

The Right to Information (RTI) application was filed by one Sayak Sen in April, media reports said.

"Some information about Gumnami Baba and Bhagwanji is available in the Mukherjee Commission report on pg-114-122. This report is available at mha.nic.in. Mukherjee Commission had come to the conclusion that Gumnami Baba/Bhagwanji was not Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose," the MHA said.

But, Netaji’s family does not seem to be happy with the government's response. “This is irresponsible move… How can the government conclude Netaji’s death without concrete evidence?’’ asked Netaji’s grandnephew and Bengal BJP vice president Chandra Bose, the Indian Express reported.

Bose said the conclusion was “highly objectionable” and said he’d take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“It is he (Modi) who declassified files after 70 years. During our meeting, he promised us to take the investigations to its logical conclusion and solve the mystery,’’ the Indian Express quoted Bose as saying.

He also said the declassified files are yet to be scrutinised and asked how they could conclude that Netaji died in the plane crash.
