Major separatist network operating from prison in Kashmir's Baramulla: Police

A major separatist network was found to be operating from a prison in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla, media reports quoted police as saying Sunday.

The network was unearthed after police recovered 14 cell phones and incriminating material from inmates in a search operation conducted by the Baramulla Police and jail authorities on Sunday. 

Two of the cellphones belonged to hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam, the man allegedly behind the 2010 civilian unrest in Kashmir, top government officers from the district said.

According to the police, the phones were used by terrorists and separatist prisoners to contact their handlers in Pakistan and create unrest in the state.

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and are investigating how the articles -- which were not authorised as per the jail manual -- made their way into the jail premises.
