On November 8, the Indian government demonetised -- it withdrew from circulation notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 (worth around $7 and $15 respectively) to crack down on "black money", or undeclared cash.

The Indian public were given until December 31, or 52 days, to exchange these notes at banks.
