Indian music baron's killer released from Bangladesh jail

Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant, who was convicted for the murder of Indian music baron Gulshan Kumar in 1997, was released from Bangladeshi jail on Sunday.

Indian fugitive criminal Daud, who worled closely with Indian underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was let out of prison around 4.30 pm local time (10:30 am GMT), a senior jail official said.

It remains unclear if he would be sent back to India, where he was serving a life term since 2002.

Bangladesh home minister Asaduzzaman Khan didn't clarify Daud would be sent back to India. However, in January this year Khan had said he would be deported back to India after he finished his jail term in Bangladesh.

Daud fled India while he was out on a 14-day parole in March 2009. 

He was later spotted in Bangladesh in May 2009, following which he was arrested for suspicious movement. A Bangladesh court handed him a five-year jail sentence. In 2014, he was arrested again for suspicious behaviour.

Gulshan Kumar, founder of a popular music label in India named T-Series, was gunned down by Daud when he was getting out of a temple in Mumbai on August 12, 1997.
