Indian foreign minister Swaraj undergoes tests for kidney transplant

Indian foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said that she was at a top government hospital receiving treatment for kidney failure on Wednesday.

Sushma Swaraj, a senior leader of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, also shared on social network Twitter that she was on dialysis and undergoing tests for a kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Swaraj was admitted to AIIMS on November 7. She has been a patient of diabetes for almost 20 years. In April, she was admitted to AIIMS for pneumonia treatment and other health issues.

The 64-year-old politician has been sidelined by poor health on a number of occasions since Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party swept to power in 2014, news agency Reuters said. There has been no announcement on the delegation of her duties while she is unwell.

Although Swaraj is one of Modi's most experienced ministers, the premier has made foreign policy very much his own domain, travelling the world and working to strengthen ties, especially with the United States, Reuters said.
