India: Fire kills 6 workers locked inside Pune bakery

Six workers were killed after a fire broke out overnight in a bakery in the western Indian city of Pune. 

Police said the workers were locked inside the bakery.

"The main shutter (of the bakery) was locked from outside, all six got trapped inside and died of suffocation," a fire official told PTI.

All six were declared dead after being rushed to hospital, local media reported.

"The incident occurred due to a short circuit in the bakery premises and investigations are ongoing," police inspector Chaggan Kapshe told AFP.

"We are still identifying why the workers were locked inside."

All six employees were from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, AFP reported.

Poor safety standards and lax enforcement of existing regulations make workplace accidents common in India.

In November, 13 workers of an illegal garment factory in New Delhi were killed after a short circuit caused a fire.
