The Goods and Service Tax (GST) Council meeting to deliberate on tax rates is underway in Srinagar's Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre.

The meeting is being attended by the finance ministers of all the states and union territories.

The meeting is being chaired by union finance minister Arun Jaitley.

The 14th GST meeting in Srinagar comes in the wake of ongoing unrest in the valley.

The Mehbooba Mufti-led government in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is keen on being a part of the GST framework which will subsume all indirect taxes into a single tax.

The Jammu and Kashmir government will call a special session of the state assembly to pass a GST-related legislation to pave the way for its implementation, reported NDTV.

The GST Council will meet for the next two days to include goods and services in the 5, 12, 18 or 28 per cent tax bracket.

It is expected to kick off from July 1 this year.
