Flood threat looms as rivers swell in India's Bihar, Uttar Pradesh

Large parts of India remained under flood water on Saturday (August 20) as rivers continued to flow above danger level.
In eastern Bihar state, people were seen wading through knee-deep water. Houses along the river banks were completely submerged.
"We are facing a lot of problems, everything has been submerged in river. There is no arrangement of food, drinking water or boats. We don't know what to do," said one resident in Patna city.
There were similar scenes in Mirzapur district of northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh where people living in low lying areas were fleeing to safer ground.
"Water has been gushing in the area for the last three days. All the land has been inundated with flood water. All the crops have been damaged. Water has started entering our houses," said a villager.
In central state of Madhya Pradesh too, River Kshipra remained in spate, inundating many areas in Ujjain district.
Excessive monsoon rains this year have affected many parts of India, causing water levels along several major rivers to rise uncontrollably.
Monsoon rains in India regularly cause floods and water-borne diseases, as civic administrations often fail to cope with challenges they pose.
