Court case to begin against journalists held in Myanmar: Police

Even as several countries demanded the release of two journalists held in Myanmar, local police said they had completed investigating the two men and would soon begin a court case.

Aung San Suu Kyi's spokesman told Reuters news agency, a court case would soon begin against two journalists.

Two Reuters journalists were arrested on December 12th in Yangon. The journalists were reporting extensively from Rakhine State which is the epicentre of Rohingya exodus to Bangladesh.

Myanmar's Information ministry later said the reporters were "illegally" acquiring information with the intention to share it with foreign media.

A police spokesman said the reporters - Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo would have access to a lawyer and be able to meet members of their families, Reuters reported.

The spokesman said Myanmar's ministry of home affairs and police had detained the two men in Yangon and both were "in good condition" and were not subjected to "illegal questioning", Reuters said.

Several countries including Germany, Norway, Japan including the US and the UN had condemned Myanmar for arresting the two journalists and called for their immediate release.
