Awami League was founded on June 23, 1949, in Dhaka of the then East Pakistan.
Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Sunday greeted the countrymen on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of Awami League Party.
In a message, Sheikh Hasina said that party along with the people would build a hunger and poverty free, happy and prosperous 'Sonar Bangla' as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh.
"On this day I recall with respect the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. I recall Awami League’s founder president Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and general secretary, Shamsul Haque," she said.
"Under the leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this organisation (Awami League Party) was well organised in the whole of Bangladesh. He also led the party to be elected in the 1970 election and the first sun of independent Bangladesh government rose on April 10 and April 17 at the Amrakanon of Meherpur in 1971," she said.
I recall with respect Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, she added in a message issued marking the anniversary.
Recently, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had missed PM Modi's swearing-in on May 30 for a second time.
Instead of her, Liberation War Affairs Minister of Bangladesh AKM Mozammel Huq attended the ceremony as the senior-most Cabinet member of the Bangladesh government.
