An arrest warrant was issued against former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari was asked to appear on June 11 by an accountability court in Toshakhana (national depository) case, a report claimed.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor, during the hearing, asked the court to issue an arrest warrant against Sharif, Zardari, former PM Yousaf Raza Gillani, and Omni Group Director Abdul Ghani Majeed, Pakistan-based BOL News reported.

The NAB has accused Sharif and Zardari of using cars gifted to Pakistan by the UAE and Libya during the tenure of Gillani instead of returning them to Toshakhana. It claimed that the laws were relaxed to give cars to these leaders, saying that the duty was paid using fake accounts.

NAB prosecutor also said that Zardari paid 15 per cent of the cost of the cars by using bogus accounts.

Asad Abbasi, who was representing Zardari, in the proceedings, said that an exemption request would be registered in the court. He added that Zardari is critically ill and hospitalized, and therefore be permitted immunity from a court appearance.

The next hearing of the matter is scheduled for June 11.

Sharif is in London since November last year after his health deteriorated, following which he was granted bail in Al-Azizia Mills corruption case.
