Four civilians and two soldiers were killed in a Taliban suicide bomber attack in Afghanistan on Saturday.

The suicide bomber attacked an army base using a minivan in southern Helmand province.

The death toll in the attack may rise, an army corps commander spokesperson said.

While no one claimed responsibility for the attack, Taliban insurgents had announced on last Wednesday about their annual spring offensive.

The statement issued by the Taliban insurgents on Wednesday said that the "Al-Khandaq" offensive would make use of "new and intricate tactics" aimed at "crushing, killing and capturing American invaders and their supporters."

The outbreak of spring has traditionally brought an increase in violence in Afghanistan, as melting snow allows fighters to more easily cross the mountainous terrain.
