Yearender 2021: 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' to 'Hi Mom': 10 highest grossing movies of the year

After 2020, 2021 was a difficult year for cinema-goers worldwide, with the covid-19 pandemic keeping theatres closed. Amid all this, still many movies managed to release in the theatres and raked in the moolah.

From the Chinese war movie 'The Battle at Lake Changjin' to Marvel's Spider-Man: No way Home, 'Eternals' and 'Shang-Chi', here we have curated the highest-grossing films of the year.

China’s Korean War epic film ‘The Battle at Lake Changjin’ has become the highest-grossing film in the world for this year. It has surpassed any Marvel film and Chinese New Year breakout comedy ‘Hi, Mom’. The film had released on September 30.

The movie is the most expensive film ever made in China to date, with a budget of $200 million and has currently grossed over $905 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2021.

The film fictionally depicts the story of Chinese soldiers defeating American troops despite great odds at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War.

Tom Holland's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' is now available on Amazon Prime video, but there's a glitch. You can rent a movie on the OTT platform for Rs 99. 

Another Chinese movie on the list is 'Hi, Mom'. The film has grossed $848 million at the box office, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2021, the third highest-grossing non-English film of all time, and the highest-grossing film by a solo female director.

The movie follows the story of a woman, who travels back in time to befriend her own mother in an attempt to make her life better.

Daniel Craig starrer 25th James Bond film, 'No Time to Die' which was made on a hefty budget of $250 million, has earned good numbers at the box office and has become the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year, during the Covid-19 pandemic era. 

Cary Joji Fukunaga directorial has grossed over $774 million worldwide.

The 'Fast and Furious' is one of the most celebrated franchises. Vin Diesel movie has dominated the overseas box office and set several pandemic box office records and grossed over $726 million worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 2021.

Chinese comedy-mystery buddy film 'Detective Chinatown 3' took the sixth spot in the list. The movie, which is a sequel to 'Detective Chinatown 2' (2018) and is the third instalment in the Detective series has collected over $ 699 million, becoming the highest-grossing non-American R-rated film of all time.

It is also the sixth highest-grossing film of 2021 and the sixth highest-grossing non-English film of all time.

Tom Hardy starrer movie 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' and the sequel to Venom (2018) released this year and performed well at the box office. The second film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe grossed over $500 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of 2021.

After being delayed from a November 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 'Godzilla vs. Kong' was theatrically released internationally on March 24, 2021. 

The film has received generally positive reviews from critics, broke several pandemic box office records, and grossed over $467 million worldwide, against a production budget between $155–200 million and a break-even point of $330 million, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of 2021.

After much wait, Marvel's first all Asian superhero movie, 'Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings', starring an all-Asian cast was released in theatres. The movie which has been praised for its authentic martial arts and the mind-boggling action sequences that are unlike any Marvel film before grossed over $432 million worldwide, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of 2021. 

 

 

Marvel's another movie that raked in big moolah is Chloe Zhao directorial 'Eternals'. The 26th movie in the MCU welcomes an exciting new team of superheroes and features a star-studded cast that includes Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Richard Madden and Kit Harington.

The film has grossed over $400 million worldwide, becoming the tenth highest-grossing film of 2021.
