Winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2020 announced!

Sony World Photography Awards is one of the best photography competitions in the world and has announced its winners for the year 2020. The competition received over 345,000 images from 203 countries and territories, submitted for its four competition categories: Professional, Open, Youth and Student. It is organised by the World Photography Organisation.

Pablo Albarenga's Seeds of Resistance

Uruguay's Pablo Albarenga was declared the winner of the Photographer of the Year title for his series 'Seeds of Resistance'. His theme was based on areas in danger from mining and agribusinesses with portraits of activists fighting to conserve them.

Tom Oldham's Black Francis

Tom Oldham's Black Francis won the Open Photographer of the Year award. In this portrait  Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis) was asked to to acknowledge his frustration with photoshoots. He won $5,000.

Lily's portrait

Lily's portrait brings historical reference  Johannes Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring in an 21st-century twist. This photograph won Alpha Female award.

Ioanna's Aeiforia

Aeiforia presents night-time photographs of solar panels, wind turbines and battery farms used across the small island of Tilos in Greece which is the first in the Mediterranean to run almost entirely on renewable energy.

Ioanna Sakellaraki won the Student Photographer of the Year award.

Hsien-Pang Hsieh's Hurry

Hurry, features a street performer who is seemingly walking in a hurry but is in fact standing still. Inspired by his experience as a newly arrived student in Germany, Hsien-Pang sees the image as his comment on the intensive pace of life and a reminder others to slow down. It won the Youth Photographer of the Year.
