Why is Nusrat Jahan trending? Controversies are not new to actress-MP

Nusrat Jahan- prominent Bengali actress and politician- is in the news again! Two years after her dream-like wedding in Turkey, the actress is now calling her marriage with husband Nikhil Jain invalid in the eyes of Indian law. 

This is not the first time that the actress has courted controversy. Over the years, the actress has grabbed headlines for many different reasons, sometimes for her attire and sometimes for her relationships. Scroll down to take a look at her controversial life. 

After a major win in the 2019  general election, Nusrat Jahan married her boyfriend, Nikhil Jain in an intimate ceremony in Turkey. Following a fairytale wedding, the couple hosted a grand wedding reception in Kolkata which was attended by several dignitaries including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and several Bengali film actors. 

Amid rumours of her divorce, Nusrat stated that her marriage to Nikhil Jain was not legal in the eyes of law in India. She stated that] there was no question of divorcing him. She said, "Being on foreign land, as per Turkish Marriage Regulation, ceremony is invalid. It was an interfaith marriage, it requires validation under Special Marriage Act in India which didn't happen. As per court of Law, it's not marriage but relationship or live-in relationship," Nusrat, 31, said in a statement, reported news agency ANI. "Thus, the question of divorce does not arise."

"Our separation happened long back, but I did not speak about it as I intended to keep my private life to myself. Thus, my actions must not be questioned based on 'separation', by the media or anybody I am not related to. The alleged marriage is not legal, valid and tenable; and thus, was not a marriage at all in the eye of law," she alleged.
 

Amid news of her separation from husband Nikhil Jain, reports surfaced last year that Nusrat was in a relationship with popular Bengali actor Yash Das Gupta. Yash is a well-known face of the Bengali film industry and also joined the BJP before the West Bengal assembly elections were held this year. He also contested the election but failed to win a seat.

The two have so far not confirmed or denied their relationship. 

In 2016, Nusrat's name briefly came up in the infamous Park Street rape case. Suzette Jordan was raped at gun point in a moving car in Kolkata's Park Street area. The prime accused Kader Khan, was reportedly seeing Nusrat at that time. It was stated that Nusrat had met Khan while he was at large and the two had even reportedly spent a day in Mumbai hotel soon after this incident. She had even arranged for his flight tickets to Patna even as Kolkata Police was on the lookout. No charges were made against her eventually as she had denied meeting or helping Khan. 

Her marriage with a Jain businessman was always a subject matter of controversy from the beginning and was constantly bashed by Muslim hardliners, who questioned her decision to marry a non-Muslim and following Hindu customs. 

During her oath taking ceremony as an MP of the Lok Sabha, Nusrat's attire as a newlywed bride- complete with vermillion, mangalsutra and bangles stirred a major controversy.

Newly-elected TMC MP was called out by Muslim clerics who issued a fatwa against her for sporting Mangalsutra and vermillion and called it 'un-Islamic'. 

Responding to the fatwa, Nusrat tweeted that she represents an "inclusive India" and would not pay heed to the comments made by "hardliners as it only breeds hatred and violence".
 

Newly elected, Nusrat's first day at the Parliament sparked controversy. For her first day, Nushrat along with fellow TMC MP and actress Mimi Chakraborty, chose to wear a western outfit and clicked a few selfies and photos outside India’s great democratic institution. Their choice of clothes was widely discussed on social media .

Both Nusrat and Mimi were trolled for their outfit. A certain section of social media was up in arms about their posts and even raised an objection about their attire. Both the actresses were subjected to bitter trolling with many questioning their credentials as politicians. 
 

The two were backed by several women on social media back then who stated that what they wore to the parliament was completely their choice and no one should have the right to dictate. 

Nusrat was born in a Muslim Bengali family in Kolkata, West Bengal, India to Muhammed Shah Jahan and Sushma Khatun on 8 January 1990. The actress completed her schooling and college in Kolkata. 
 

In 2010, Jahan won Fair One Miss Kolkata and started her career in modelling. She made her Tollywood debut in the year 2011, from the film, 'Shotru' alongside Jeet. Later she went on to star in many other movies and item songs, which were instant hit and chartbusters. 

Her other notable films include 'Khiladi', with Ankush Hazra, 'Sondhe Namar Agey', with Rahul Bose, 'Har Har Byomkesh', the movie was a huge box office success and many more.
