Top 10 thrilling performances by Indian actors who played trans characters

Indian cinema has time and again explored expression of the third gender in way of characters and narrative. Over the years, a few Indian actors have shed their macho personalities and have taken the challenge to portray transgender characters onscreen.

With Akshay Kumar's 'Laxxmi Bomb' releasing this Diwali in which the actor plays a transgender character, here's taking a look at top 10 such roles that we have seen and loved before.

 

 

Paresh Rawal

One of Paresh Rawal's critically acclaimed role is that of Tikku in movie 'Tamanna' that revolves around the life of Rawal's character,  who is a transgender and an only child of yesteryear Bollywood actress Nazneen Begum.

Mahesh Manjrekar( Rajjo)

Mahesh Manjrekar portrayed the role of a transgender in Kangana Ranaut starrer 'Rajjo'. In the movie, he played the role of a Begum, which received applauds from audience and critic as well.

Prashant Narayanan (Murder 2)

Prashant Narayanan's played the antagonist in Emraan Hashmi starrer movie 'Murder 2'. In the movie he played the role of the cold-blooded and creepy transgender psycho.

Sadashiv Amrapurkar (Sadak)

Sadashiv Amrapurkar bagged several awards for his role as a Maharani, a transgender. Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt starrer 'Sadak', was a huge hit back then. Sadashiv's character was considered as one of the dreadful villains in the Hindi film industry.

Prakashraj (Appu)

Prakash Raj played the role of a transgender Maharani, who runs a brothel. In the film 'Appu', he plays the main antagonist of the movie. Prakash Raj was probably the first actor to essay the role of a transgender in Tamil cinema.

Raghava Lawrence(Kanchana)

In the movie, 'Kanchana' Raghava Lawrence played Raghava, a boy, who gets possessed by a ghost and starts behaving weirdly. The ghost turns out to be a transgender woman who wants to take revenge.

Riddhi Sen (Nagarkirtan)

Riddhi Sen, played Parimal, a trans woman from rural Bengal in Kaushik Ganguly’s Bengali film, 'Nagarkirtan'. The young actor received rave reviews for his flawless acting and also won National Award for the portrayal of a transgender character. Sen is one of the youngest recipient of the award at the age of 19.

Vijay Sethupathi (Super Deluxe)

Vijay Sethupathi, who played the role of a transgender person Shilpa in the film, received huge applause for his portrayal. 'Super Deluxe', talks about life, morality, sex, gender discrimination, marriage, politics and many social issues.
