Massive blackout in Venezuela

Thousands of people took to the streets of Venezuela with tensions rising between opposition leader Juan Guaido and President Nicolas Maduro after crisis-wracked Venezuela emerged from the chaos of an electricity blackout.

Venezuela suffered a massive blackout in the history of the oil-producing country.

Fifteen Venezuelans with advanced kidney disease died after being unable to get dialysis during the country's extended power outage, an NGO reported.

Algeria's protest against President Bouteflika

Tens of thousands of people of all social classes protested over the past three weeks in Algeria to challenge President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's 20-year-old rule.

The protest rose against the ailing president's bid for a fifth term, despite the defiant leader's warning of the risk of "chaos".

Trump ex-campaign chief Manafort sentenced to 47 months in prison

US President Donald Trump's former campaign chief Paul Manafort was sentenced to 47 months in prison Thursday for tax crimes and bank fraud.

It was the stiffest sentence yet given to an associate of the president in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling.

Yazidi community evacuated from Baghouz

Yazidi community, who were captured by Islamic State (IS) group fighters, were evacuated from the IS' embattled holdout of Baghouz. The Yazidis are a mostly Iraq-based Kurdish-speaking religious minority. The jihadists consider them heretics and in 2014, tried to exterminate them.

Ethiopian Airlines flight crash,157 killed

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 passenger jet to Nairobi crashed early on Sunday with 149 passengers and eight crew members aboard, the airline said.

The flight left Bole airport in Addis Ababa at 8.38 am local time, before losing contact with the control tower just a few minutes later at 8.44 am.
