Russia marks National day amid surge in coronavirus cases

While the number of coronavirus cases in Russia continue to surge, the country which became an independent nation in 1990, celebrated its 28th National Day on June 12.

Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday showed up at a ceremony marking the national holiday, the first big public event he has attended since announcing a nationwide lockdown more than two months ago.

Putin observed the hoisting of the national flag at a memorial park in western Moscow and then took part in an award ceremony. He wasn’t wearing a mask, and neither did most of those he awarded with Hero of Russia medals.

The walls of Kremlin, a fortified complex in the center of Moscow, overlooking the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil's Cathedral, were lit up with digital projection on Russia Day.

Muscovites celebrated the country's national day with a big concert on Red Square. Spectators gathering near the Kremlin had to maintain social distancing, sitting at a distance from each other, with some wearing face masks and gloves.

Dubai

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai (UAE) which tallest tower in the world at a height of 828 meters, was lit up on Friday portraying the Russian flag to celebrate Russia Day.

Spartak Moscow, a Russian professional football club from Moscow, hosted the National Team of the country at the Otkrytie Arena in a football match to honour the national day of Russia.

Members of the Russian hydroflight team held the Russian national flag during the Russia Day celebration in St.Petersburg.

Since 1992, over 145 million Russians have celebrated the day as National Russia Day, enjoying festivities and concerts across the nation.
