Romain Grosjean's fireball crash: Haas' fiery F1 accident in pictures

Romain Grosjean on Sunday survived a horrific crash, that left his Haas torn in half and engulfed in flames, at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Grosjean received minor burns and is being treated at a hospital with Tuesday being the expected day of his discharge.

Romain Grosjean on Sunday survived a horrific crash, that left his Haas torn in half and engulfed in flames, at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Grosjean received minor burns and is being treated at a hospital with Tuesday being the expected day of his discharge. 

Grosjean is stable after his Haas smashed through the safety barriers at the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix on the opening lap, bringing the race to a halt. The incident happened after Grosjean’s Haas came with Daniil Kvyat’s Alpha Tauri.

“It looked like an oven,” Roberts, who was seen rushing towards the blaze, wearing an open-face helmet, told reporters.

“It was red with flame and you could see him trying to get himself out and he was gradually getting himself further and further out.”

FIA’s Formula One medical rescue co-ordinator Roberts, medical car driver Alan van der Merwe and fire marshals were first on the spot and are being hailed as heroes for showing courage against the flames and getting Grosjean to safety.

“There was a fire marshal rapidly on scene and that push of the extinguisher, the powder pushed the flames back enough, once Romain was high enough we could get him over the barrier and away,” Roberts said.

“But it was a very small window because as soon as the extinguisher powder went forward, the flames were coming back pretty soon afterwards.”

Romain Grosjean’s wife Marion paid tribute to her husband, his rescuers and fans around the world as the family of Jules Bianchi, the French racer who lost his life as a result of head injuries suffered during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. The blazing flames brought nightmares back but everyone breathed a sigh of relief after watching Grosjean jump out of the car amid the fire.

Haas released a further statement on Monday morning, claiming that treatment for the burns on both of Grosjean's hands was "going well" and that team boss Guenther Steiner had visited him.

"It is anticipated he will be discharged from the car of the hospital on Tuesday, December 1st," they added.

Other drivers, who were concerned about the incident straight away as per the radio recording, gathered in the pit-lane and along with their team members, appeared shaken when looking at the video of Grosjean’s crash. Haas boss Guenther Steiner was thankful for the speedy help from those nearby.
