Refugees who became famous because someone saved them

One International Day of Peace, WION looks back to few saviours and survivors who made a difference to the world

Phan Thi Kim Phuc- Commonly referred to as the 'Napalm Girl'. She survived third-degree burn covering 30 per cent of her body during Vietnam War. She was on the famous award-winning photograph taken by Nick Ut that brought world?s attention to horrors of Vietnam war. In 1994, Kim Ph?c was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. She has received an honorary Doctorate of Law from York University for her work to support child victims of war around the world.

Malala Yousafzai- She is known for her human rights advocacy, especially for female education. She is the youngest ever Nobel laureate. Taliban started threatening her for her active participation in promoting gender equality in Pakistan. Brutally attacked at the age of 9, Malala has, however, survived.

Zannah Mustapha- The Nigerian, has been named the winner of Nansen Refugee Award(2017). He is the founder of ?The Future of Prowess Islamic Foundation School? for orphans and vulnerable children in Maiduguri, Borno. The school provides Islamic-based education to children orphaned by the insurgency. Boko Haram has terrorised the area since 2012, killing 20,000 and displacing millions.

Yusra Mardini- A Syrian refugee currently living in Berlin, Germany. She is a swimmer and was a member of refugee Olympic athletes team. She competed under the Olympic flag at 2016 summer Olympic in Rio De Janerio, Brazil.

Ishak- A Rohingya refugee who found a new beginning in Malaysia. He started pursuing his dream of getting an education at the United Nations Refugee Agency. He strives to be an engineer or a footballer.

Mari Malek- She left war-ravaged Sudan as a child and moved to the US. She is now an actor, supermodel and a DJ. She uses her status to advocate war-affected children. In 2017 her movie ?The Nile Hilton Incident? was released.

Alixandra Fazzina- Alixandra Fazzina is a British journalist who has traveled war-affected areas and has showcased devastation of wars. United Nations have acknowledged Fazzina's documentaries on Somali refugee, landmine victims in Kosovo, abuse of children by militias in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Aqeela Asifi- She is an Afghan and had to leave her country when Taliban took over in 1992. She moved to refugee camps in Mianwali, Pakistan and started teaching. She is a trained teacher of Geography and History. Aqeela has dedicated her life to guiding thousands of refugee girls through their primary education.

Hellenic Rescue Team- They won Nansen Refugee Award in 2016 for their tireless efforts to rescue refugees across the Greek Island. Quick actions taken by Konstantinos Mitragas along with his other volunteer helped migrants continuously coming from Syria, Afganistan and Iraq.

Angelique Namaika- She is a nun who helped survivors of brutal violence done in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She helped more than 2000 Congolese women and girls to overcome the trauma of rape and sexual abuse. In providing the victims with education and helping them to set-up business. Angelique has helped war-affected women to re-establish their lives.
