Rains wreck havoc across South Asia

The monsoon, which lasts from June to September, causes widespread death and destruction across South Asia each year.

 

Nepal has been the worst affected country in South Asia, with at least 67 people dying due to the flash floods. Thirty people are also missing.

Nepal Police and Army personnel have rescued 1146 people so far from 22 flood-hit districts of the country so far. 

Lalitpur, Bhojpur, and Rautahat witnessing the highest death toll.

The downpours have eased in Nepal but authorities still fear the death toll could rise.

In Bangladesh, at least 29 people have died including 18 who were hit by lightning and seven who drowned after their boat capsized in choppy waters in the Bay of Bengal. 

Another 10 died in overcrowded Rohingya refugee camps in southeast Bangladesh where thousands of shanty homes have been destroyed.

Aid groups were providing rations to Rohingya refugees in the southeast of the country with the UN World Food Programme.

 

As many as 15 people have lost their lives after 14 districts in Uttar Pradesh witnessed torrential rainfall and thunderstorm in the past three days.

According to official data,15 people died, 23 animals were killed while 133 buildings collapsed due to rain-related incidents.

Among the districts that were affected by the natural calamity are Unnao, Ambedkar Nagar, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Hardoi, Khiri, Gorakhpur, Kanpur Nagar, Pilibhit, Sonabhadra, Chandoli, Firozabad, Mau and Sultanpur.

In Assam, heavy monsoon rains displaced more than a million people from their homes and flash floods killed at least 11 people.

According to a report, 26,45,533 people in 3,181 villages and localities under 103 revenue circles in 28 districts are affected.

Over 10.42 lakh animals are affected, while flood waters have also entered 87,607 hectares of farmland.

Two children have lost their lives as heavy downpour wreaked havoc in Bihar.

Following the torrential rains, six districts have severely been affected due to the rising level of rivers. These districts include Sheohar, Sitamarhi, North Champaran, Jayanagar in Madhubani, Araria, and Kishanganj.
