Oscars 2021: 'Mank' to 'Manari', nominees in Best Picture category

The nominees of the 93rd Academy Awards are finally out and the list of contenders in the coveted Best Picture category is long. The competition is fierce between most nominated film of the year 'Mank' and South Korean heart-winning film 'Minari', along with critics' favourite 'Nomadland'

Here are all the nominees in the Best Picture category for Oscars 2021: 

Mank is a biographical drama film about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his development of the screenplay for the classic film Citizen Kane (1941). Directed by David Fincher, based on a screenplay by his late father Jack Fincher, the film was produced by Ceán Chaffin, Douglas Urbanski, and Eric Roth. It stars Gary Oldman in the title role, alongside Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, and Charles Dance.

David Fincher's father Jack Fincher wrote the script in the 1990s, and David originally intended to film in the 90s with Kevin Spacey and Jodie Foster as the leads. It never came to fruition, and Jack Fincher died in 2003. Eventually, the project was officially announced in July 2019. To pay homage to the films of the 1930s, Mank was shot in black-and-white using RED cameras.

Mank had a limited theatrical release on November 13, 2020, and began streaming on Netflix on December 4. 

Judas and the Black Messiah is a biographical drama film about the events that lead to the betrayal of Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, at the hands of William O'Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant. The film is directed and produced by Shaka King, who wrote the screenplay with Will Berson, based on a story by the pair and Kenny and Keith Lucas.

Judas and the Black Messiah premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on February 1, 2021, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on February 12, simultaneously in theaters and digitally on HBO Max.

Korean-American drama film 'Minari' is a semi-autobiographical take on Chung's upbringing, the plot follows a family of South Korean immigrants who try to make it in rural America during the 1980s.

The film also bagged the Golden Globe 2021 award in the Best Motion Picture- Foreign Language category. The movie has been directed by Lee Isaac Chung and it stars Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-Jung, and Will Patton.

'Nomadland', the frontrunner of the award season might mark another milestone at this years Oscars. Chloé Zhao's critically lauded drama starring Frances McDormand is the frontrunner to win Best Picture.

The film is written, edited, and directed by Chloé Zhao. It stars Frances McDormand as a woman who leaves home to travel around the American West. The film is based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First

 

The category that can't be predicted, The category has some outstanding actors fighting for the Golden trophy. Among all, 'Promising Young Woman' star Carey Mulligan may win the Oscars this year. 

Darius Marder's most talked about movie, 'Sound of Metal', gained strong reviews from critics at different festivals before its digital release. The Amazon original is one of the frontrunners for the gold trophy and follows the story of a drummer played by Riz Ahmed, who suddenly loses his hearing.

Aaron Sorkin's 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' is a rare drama about the 1960s. The film follows the Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam War protesters charged with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intention of inciting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Anthony Hopkins, 83, is now the oldest person to win an acting Oscar, after winning the Best Actor for his performance in 'The Father'

It is Hopkins second Oscar, coming 29 years after he won the best actor in 1992 for 'The Silence Of The Lambs'.
