Mother's Day special: Saluting some powerful reel mothers of Bollywood

Bollywood has always portrayed the mother as a strong character in their movies. In recent years, filmmakers have tried to show mothers as more progressive, more vengeful and more obsessive. 

As we all are celebrating Mother’s Day today, let’s have a look at how Bollywood mothers have changed in the recent years.

An aspiring singer and a single mother, Eela gives up her dream for her son and over the course of time become a helicopter parent. Years later, when she joins his young boy in his college to make up for what's lost between them- their relationship goes through a change.

In 'Mom', Sridevi played the character of Devki, a biology teacher who seeks help from DK, a private detective, and vows to get revenge after her stepdaughter's rapists are acquitted by the court.

'Nil Battey Sannata' is one of the sweetest mother-daughter story that Bollywood has seen in recent times. In the movie Swara Bhaskar plays the role of Chanda Sahay, a high-school drop-out household maid and single mother of a young girl who dreams that her daughter would become an IAS officer. To convince daughter to study harder and to finish her own schooling, she enrolls herself in the same class as her daughter which strains their relationship.

While 'Khoobsurat' was about Sonam Kapoor, it also highlighted her relationship with her mother, Manju played by Kirron Kher. Manju and her daughter's relationship was moree like of two friends and the two actresses shared crackling chemistry on screen making this mother-daughter duo memorable.

Ayushmann Khurrana debut movie 'Vicky Donor' was a cult hit. In the movie Vicky's progressive grandmother and his mother were the feisty women Vicky grew up with. Dolly Ahluwalia played the single mother with absolute conviction.

Shabana Azmi always amazes everyone with her performances and 'Neerja' was no dioffrent. She played Sonam Kapoor's mother in the film. Based on slain air hostess Neerja Bhanot's life, the film highlighted the poignant relationship she shared with her brave mother, Rama Bhanot.

Veteran actress Ramya Krishnan showcased stellar  performances as Rajmatha Shivgamani in SS Rajamouli's 'Bahubali'. Rajmata was a true leader and a caring mother who treated everyone equally irrespective of status and position.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan payed a role of a single mother and a lawyer Anuradha in Sanjay Gupta's 'Jazbaa' who finds herself in a do-or-die situation when her daughter Sanaya is kidnapped. The kidnapper then blackmails her to defend a rapist Miyaaz Shaikh.

Priyanka Chopra plays Aditi, mother of teenage girl Aisha Chaudhary, and a backbone of the family in Shonali Bose' 'The Sky Is PINK'.In the film, Aditi plays a pillar of strength for her little daughter and family and keeps it together as they fight Aisha's terminal illness.

 

 

Raveena Tondon's 'Maatr', follows the story of a mother who decides to take revenge, after a group of boys sexually assault her daughter.
