Memorable protests from sportspersons against injustice

Athletes stand together against racism and terrorism, from cricket to football and from Muhammad Ali to Colin Kaepernick, by Srishti Singh Sisodia

Muhammad Ali

Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali fought against racism in the U.S. also, he was a political activist.

He refused to join US army and resisted the Vietnam war draft, thus convicted of draft evasion, the US government tried to send him to prison. But the US Supreme Court later overturned the charges.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos

1968 Olympics, 200m gold and bronze medalist Tommie Smith and John Carlos respectively, protested against racism.

They stood with their heads bowed raising a black-gloved hand as the American National Anthem played during the victory ceremony.

American football player

American football player Colin Kaepernick initiated a protest against New York police brutality. The NFL players took a knee during the national anthem before a game, or stand with arms locked in silent protest.

This bold move started as a result of repeated videos showing police shooting and killing unarmed black men.

Los Angeles Clippers

Los Angeles Clippers players protested silently against owner Donald Sterling. In response to Sterling's comments urging a woman to not bring black people to his team's games.

They ran out of the tunnel wearing their usual warmup uniforms. Then they huddled at center court and tossed the outer layer of their warmups uniforms to the ground. Players also wore a black wristband or armband during the game.

LeBron James

LeBron James is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association. Cleveland Cavaliers stars LeBron James and Kyrie Irving wore T-shirts with ?I Can?t Breathe? on them during a game at the Brooklyn Nets in support of Eric Garner.

On July 17, 2014, Garner died in a Staten Island neighbourhood as the result of a chokehold from an NYPD officer.

Barcelona

After the Barcelona terrorist attack on 19th August 2017, Barcelona players paid a special tribute to victims of terrorist attacks by wearing the special jersey, written Barcelona on its back.

Even the squad list came with "Barcelona" as their surname such as Gerard Barcelona, Arda Barcelona, Leo Barcelona, Andre Barcelona etc.

Hashim Amla

South African cricketer Hashim Amla does not wear a Castle logo (A beer company) on his cricket shirt.

Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir have been given special exemption not to wear the logo of Castle Lager, the team's major sponsor, as Muslims are forbidden from drinking alcohol.

Kieron Pollard

Commonly known as "The Duct Tape Protest". Kieron Pollard had a weird way of protesting against the umpires.

He made a statement by not uttering a word and taping up his mouth instead, after being cautioned by the on-field umpire to put an end to his chattering with Chris Gayle during an IPL match.
