Lok Sabha polls 2019: Chinese wall graffiti appear on Kolkata streets

Graffiti asks to support TMC candidate Mala Ray from the Kolkata South constituency. 

Graffiti and using it to canvass for votes was much used by the communists in Bengal. Now, in the age of social media, graffiti is making a return to Kolkata — and this time it's in Chinese. 

The graffiti in question has made an appearance in Kolkata's Chinatown which is home to Chinese Hakka people who had migrated to Kolkata centuries ago; the third and fourth generations still live in the city and are an integral part of the electoral process. 

This time around, the residents of Chinatown have shown their support for the ruling party in the state — the Trinamool Congress (TMC) — and have written slogans in support of it in the Chinese language. 

Robert and Alexander say that they are happy with the development that China Town has undergone in recent years, which is why they are supporting the TMC. 

The graffiti asks voters to support Mala Ray, the TMC candidate from the Kolkata South constituency.
