Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in the northern Indian city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is a dream project of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Upon completion, the project is expected to transform the area around Kashi Vishwanath and make a major difference in the ancient city.

The temple, till now, was ensconced in the tiny lanes of Varanasi and access to the same was invariably a problem -- especially on special occasions when the crowds swelled. The temple lacked direct visibility from the Ganga River. The 20-25 feet wide corridor that was formally inaugurated on Monday, will connect Lalita Ghat on the Ganga to the Mandir Chowk in the temple premises. Devotees can take a dip in the Indian holy river and offer prayers to Lord Shiva in the temple from there itself.

In total, the project covers approximately 500,000 square feet, whereas earlier premises were only around 3000 square feet. A total of about 70 percent of the project's 5.50 lakh sq ft area is reserved for green cover.

Today (13th December), Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated phase 1 of the project, built at a cost of a little over USD 44 million (INR 339 crore). Twenty-three buildings have been inaugurated, including the Tourist Facilitation Centre, Mumukshu Bhavan, the Bhogshala, the City Museum, and the Viewing Gallery. We may have to wait a few more weeks until some of these phase 1 projects are open to the public.

It is a testament to the fact that how our ancient values are guiding us towards our future." "When you come here, you will not see only faith. You will also feel the glory of your past here. You will see how pracheenta (ancient) and naventa (modern) come alive together. This whole new complex of Vishwanath Dham is not just a grand building.
