India bids farewell to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was cremated with state honours on Monday, with thousands bidding the affable politician a fond farewell.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday. He was 63.

The death was announced by President of India from his Twitter handle.

The central government announced a day of national mourning on Monday.

The funeral procession of Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar took place in Panaji on Monday, with thousands joining the cortege to bid him a fond farewell.

The mortal remains of the 63-year-old senior BJP leader were kept in a flower-decked hearse.

The affection and popularity Parrikar enjoyed among ordinary Goans was on display as hundreds of common folks, and his party workers lined up to pay tributes to the chief minister, who died on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

After arriving in the coastal state, PM Modi reached the Kala Academy in Panaji where he met Parrikar's family members and offered his condolences to them.

Modi described him as an unparalleled leader, who was a true patriot and an exceptional administrator, admired by all.

Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman also met Parrikar's family members and paid tribute to him.

Parrikar, a four-time chief minister, died at his private residence Sunday evening after battling the pancreatic ailment since February last year.

The IIT graduate represented Panaji Assembly seat in the state for over two decades.

The final rites of Parrikar were performed at the Miramar beach.

Parrikar's eldest son Utpal lit the funeral pyre.

BJP president Amit Shah, some Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states attended the funeral at Miramar.
